Many of us would like whiter teeth. Tooth colour can be a very individual thing: it can darken as we get older and it is often affected by modern diets. Food and drink such as tea, coffee, red wine and smoking can all take the sparkle away from our smiles. Teeth Whitening can be a really effective way to lighten your teeth by a number of shades.
There are various different treatments available and the active ingredient is usually carbamide peroxide. It lifts off stains from within the enamel and only works on natural teeth; for advice about stained or discoloured dentures, crowns and veneers, ask us at the practice.
At Trinity House Dental Practice in Yeovil, we offer Enlighten at-home whitening. This involves the making of whitening trays the filling of these with the Enlighten whitening gel and being worn overnight for a number of nights until one reaches the desired whiteness. This can change person to person, but 10 days to two weeks would be normal.
How long the whitening will last varies: it won’t last as long if you smoke or your teeth come into contact with many staining foods and drinks on a regular basis. Some people may experience side effects which are usually temporary. They can include sensitivity to extreme temperature, white patches on the gums and gum discomfort. Speak to us if symptoms last longer than a few days.
